Is It Time to Repair or Replace Your Water Faucets?

The humble water faucet is one of the most important yet underrated marine plumbing fitting in your home. It keeps your dishes spick and span. It rinses your fresh fruits and vegetables. It helps you wash off the muck and grime from your hands.

Unfortunately, this marine plumbing fitting cannot last forever. When your water faucet starts showing signs of deterioration, it’s time to repair or replace it. But when do you do so? We examine the different signs of worn-out water faucets and whether you should repair or replace them.

Signs of Deteriorating Water Faucets

If you spot the following signs below, your marine plumbing fittings most likely need to be repaired or replaced.

1. A leaky faucet: This is typically caused by a spoilt cartridge inside the faucet, loosened valves and/or worn-out faucets. Persistent leaks are nuisances that can lead to water pooling under the sink, higher water bills and the growth of mould.

2. Clogging: Mineral deposits may build up internally over time before it becomes visible. These minerals will eventually clog the pipes and if left untreated, the pipes will have greater pressure and eventually burst, causing greater damage.

3. Water discolouration: This is the biggest sign of deterioration. Due to the daily exposure of moisture, the water faucet will be corroded internally over time. Iron will be released into the water when the tap is switched on and the water will be unsafe for consumption, especially for children, the elderly and individuals with weak immune systems.

Repair Or Replace Your Water Faucets?

To keep your costs low, repair your faucet if the leak is caused by loose valves or spoilt cartridges. Stop the leak by tightening the valve or replacing the cartridge inside the handle assembly.
However, if the faucet continues to leak repeatedly after repair, it’s time to replace it. It is also not cost-effective if you continuously try to fix a faucet when it’s much easier to replace the entire apparatus.

Replace the faucet if it’s old, worn-out or corroded. A rule of thumb is to replace water faucets that are over 10 years old. Even if you cannot see the signs, old faucets tend to have rust and mineral build-ups around and inside the spigot. Choose the correct replacement faucet when you’re replacing your water faucet.
