4 Things to Look Out For When Choosing the Right Marine Mortise Locks

What Are Marine Mortise Locks?

A mortise lock derives its name from the way it is installed. The mortise lock requires a pocket, also known as a mortise, that is cut into the edge of the door. The lock is then fitted into this pocket.

The mortise lock is designed to be both a doorknob as well as a deadbolt and this dual-purpose can be very useful. Due to its high durability and strength, mortice locks are commonly used in commercial buildings, while marine mortise locks are typically used onboard sea vessels.

How to Choose the Right Marine Mortise Locks?

1. Ensure your mortise lock fits the door

As a marine mortise lock is installed into the pocket at the edge of the door, your door width must be thick enough to accommodate it.

Different door handles may be used but ensure that you choose door handles with the same pitch size. A pitch size refers to the distance between the spindle hole and the centre of the keyway. A common pitch size is 85mm.

It is recommended that you install a marine mortise lock on any door that isn’t kick-proof or pick-proof.

2. Choosing between full mortise locks and half mortise locks

A half mortise lock is not completely encased within the door. The lock only fits the inside of the door, with its back will be exposed. It is less durable than a full mortise lock. Nevertheless, a half mortise lock is still stronger than a typical bored cylindrical lock.

3. Get a mortise lock with a specialised cylinder

You get greater security with mortice locks as the bolt can be moved twice as far, which provides better security for your home. But accidents may happen and if you unintentionally leave a key in the inside of the lock while it is engaged, the door can no longer be opened from outside. A mortise lock with a specialised cylinder can prevent this accident and enables you to open it outside with a key.

4. Choose an established supplier

An established supplier will supply mortise locks that are guaranteed to last and be certified for use in various buildings, giving you that peace of mind.

Mortise locks are also notoriously hard to install. It is very important to engage a locksmith who is experienced with mortise locks to ensure that the lock is installed correctly and securely within the door.
